As AI development progresses, new capabilities may present new risks.
Google says in it’s announcement “There’s a global competition taking place for AI leadership within an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. We believe democracies should lead in AI development, guided by core values like freedom, equality, and respect for human rights. And we believe that companies, governments, and organizations sharing these values should work together to create AI that protects people, promotes global growth, and supports national security.”
Google’s 2024 Responsible AI Progress Report, is now based on the United States’ NIST Risk Management Framework.
Google says “We develop AI that assists, empowers, and inspires people in almost every field of human endeavor; drives economic progress; and improves lives, enables scientific breakthroughs, and helps address humanity’s biggest challenges.”
Google further defines afore said as:
- Developing, deploying models and applications where the likely overall benefits substantially outweigh the foreseeable risks.
- Advancing the frontier of AI research through rigorous application of the scientific method, rapid iteration, and open inquiry.
- Focusing on solving real world problems, measuring the tangible outcomes of our work, and making breakthroughs broadly available, enabling humanity to achieve its most ambitious and beneficial goals.
Google explains their responsible development as:
- Implementing human oversight, due diligence, and feedback mechanisms to align with user goals, social responsibility, and widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.
- Investing in safety and security research and benchmarks, technical solutions to address risks.
- Rigorous design, testing, monitoring, and safeguards to mitigate unintended or harmful outcomes and avoid unfair bias.
- Respecting intellectual property rights.
Googles principles have been aken into account in frameworks and policies, such as the Secure AI Framework for security and privacy, and the Frontier Safety Framework for evolving model capabilities.
On Feb 4th, 2025 Google published an updated Frontier Safety Framework, which includes:
Recommendations for Heightened Security: to identify where the strongest efforts to curb exfiltration risk are needed.
Deployment Mitigations Procedure: preventing the misuse of critical capabilities in the systems we deploy.
Deceptive Alignment Risk: the risk of an autonomous system deliberately undermining human control.
Their AI governance process covers model development, application deployment, and post-launch monitoring. AI risks are identified through research, external expert input, and red teaming. They then evaluate systems against safety, privacy, and security benchmarks. Mitigations with techniques such safety tuning, security controls, and robust provenance solutions.
