Eric Schmidt: “Ride the wave, ride it every day”

Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and chairman, gave a TED talk recently. From his vantage point as Google’s former CEO and a key shaper of internet history, Eric Schmidt’s insights on the AI revolution are nothing short of compelling. In a recent TED conversation, he laid out the profound opportunities – and critical challenges – facing humanity as AI, AGI, and ultimately ASI become reality faster than most ever imagined. Here are seven key points he raised, in his own words and commentary:


1. The Limit for Compute is Energy

Schmidt is unsparing about the core bottleneck for AI: energy. The coming wave of more powerful AI models will require physical resources at a scale most have never considered:

“There’s a real limit in energy…we need another 90 gigawatts of power in America. 90 gigawatts is 90 nuclear power plants. Not happening. We’re building zero, right? How are we going to get all that power? This is a major, major national issue.”

He points out that the explosion in compute needs for training and running models isn’t likely to abate: while algorithms may get more efficient, the demands of planning and learning in real time (“test-time compute”) will vastly outstrip any incremental gains from Moore’s Law.


2. Building Data Centers: Think Cities per Data Center

The scale-up is mind-boggling. Schmidt frames it in the starkest terms:

“To understand how big gigawatts are, think cities per data center. That’s how much power these things need.”

Countries like the UAE are building 5–10 gigawatt data centers; India is considering a 10-gigawatt complex. Each new generation of capability turns a data center from a warehouse to a full-blown city.


3. What’s the Limit of Knowledge?

In the history of scientific discovery—whether it’s biology, mathematics, or any other field—the real breakthroughs often come when a brilliant mind spots a pattern in one domain and recognizes its relevance somewhere entirely different. They connect the dots across seemingly unrelated disciplines, borrowing tools and ideas from one field and applying them in another. This kind of creative leap, the ability to transfer insights and methodologies in such transformative ways, is something today’s AI systems still can’t do.

Eric Schmidt refers to this challenge as the “non-stationarity of objectives”—a technical way of saying that the rules and goals keep shifting, and true intelligence must adapt as patterns and opportunities change. If AI can ever crack this fundamental obstacle, it won’t just demand vastly more computing resources. It would mean opening the door to entirely new schools of scientific thought and intellectual discovery—innovations we can hardly imagine today. The implications would be truly profound.

As compute scales, so does the ambition. But Schmidt asks: will AI ever truly transcend the base of prior human knowledge?

“How do we invent something completely new?…A truly brilliant human being looks at one area and says, ‘I see a pattern that’s in a completely different area, has nothing to do with the first one. It’s the same pattern.’ …Today, our systems cannot do that.”

Right now, even frontier AI systems lack the “non-stationarity of objectives”—the ability to discover and abstract paradigm-shifting principles from one domain and leap to another, as Einstein did from Newtonian physics.


4. Why Don’t We Have a Tutor and Doctor Assistant for Everyone?

Despite the apparent readiness of technology, Schmidt laments the lack of basic, high-impact AI applications in everyday life:

“Why do we not have every human being on the planet have their own tutor in their own language to help them learn something new?…The answer, the only possible answer is there must not be a good economic argument. The technology works.”

And health?

“The vast majority of healthcare in the world is either absent or delivered by the equivalent of nurse practitioners and…very, very…stressed local village doctors. Why do they not have the doctor assistant that helps them in their language, treat whatever with, again, perfect healthcare?”

Schmidt clearly sees it as a societal failure, not a technological one.


5. AGI and ASI Are Coming Sooner Than You Think — “Don’t Screw It Up!”

Emphasizing the stakes, Schmidt says:

“The arrival of this intelligence, both at the AI level, the AGI, which is general intelligence, and then superintelligence, is the most important thing that’s going to happen in about 500 years, maybe 1,000 years in human society. And it’s happening in our lifetime. So don’t screw it up.”

He frames the moment as a unique, possibly existential inflection point for civilization.


6. These Tools Will Radically Improve Productivity

Schmidt is almost incredulous about the upside, echoing economic forecasts he’s seen:

“These tools will radically increase that productivity. There’s a study that says that we will, under this set of assumptions around agentic AI and discovery and the scale that I’m describing…you’ll end up with something like 30-percent increase in productivity per year …We just have never seen it. It didn’t occur in any rise of a democracy or a kingdom in our history. It’s unbelievable what’s going to happen.”

No economic event in recorded history will compare. Even the industrial revolution will look like a footnote.

“If you’re not using this technology, you’re not going to be relevant compared to your peer groups and your competitors and the people who want to be successful …

Adopt it and adopt it fast.”

I have been shocked at how fast these systems, as an aside, my background is enterprise software … You can actually connect the model directly into the databases without any of the connectors… There’s a whole industry there that goes away, because you have all this flexibility now. You can just say what you want, and it just produces it. That’s an example of a real change in business. There are so many of these things coming every day.

7. Hopefully We Will Get It in the Right Direction.”

Bringing it all together, Schmidt underscores both the awe and the gravity:

“It’s unbelievable what’s going to happen. Hopefully we will get it in the right direction.”

He leaves us with a dual message: the transformation is unstoppable and almost unimaginably vast. Whether it brings dystopia or abundance is a choice for all of us—policymakers, technologists, business leaders, and citizens—to steer wisely, urgently, and humanely.
